About this Experience

In this trip, trek through the beautiful green jungles of northern Thailand while experiencing the local cultures through community homestays. Lisu Lodge offers hill tribe holidays that include cultural and adventure experiences. Named after the Lisu hill tribe village that is found near the lodge, the lodge is a part of a community-based project that aims to conserve the natural heritage of the hill tribes in Chiang Mai. Amidst emerald-green rice fields and lush orchards, Khum Lanna also gives you a luxurious homestay experience combined with culinary holidays, focusing on traditional Thai cuisine. Through interacting with locals, hiking across the landscape, and visiting organic farms, discover how the natural and the manmade co-exist in beautiful harmony.

Your Itinerary


Day One: LISU LODGE – LAHU OUTPOST You will arrive at the Lisu Lodge around 10 a.m. After discussing your itinerary, we will be driven in a pick-up truck to the starting point near Pha Mieng. We will hike (90 minutes) along a jungle trail and stop at the remote village of Hmong Pha Mieng (90 minutes) to visit the inhabitants of this small hill-tribe village.


Enjoy a picnic lunch in the forest. Make your way to the top of the mountain (90 minutes) where the Red Lahu Village of Pha Daeng is located. We will continue walking along the mountain ridge to the Lahu village of Kup Kap (60 minutes). From that high vantage point, we will have a spectacular view of the Mae Taeng district and Chiang Mai city. Beyond the mountain peaks to the west lies Myanmar (Burma).


We will have dinner and stay overnight at Lahu Outpost, which is modeled on a traditional Lahu house. Basic facilities and amenities such as modern toilets and a communal shower, mattresses, pillows, bed linen, blankets, towels and mosquito nets are provided.


LAHU OUTPOST - LISU LODGEA fter an early breakfast, we will hike down a steep jungle path (90 minutes) passing the Huay Sadharn waterfall. A picnic lunch will be served on riverbank. Then we will go rafting down the river for another 45 minutes. Following this exciting ride in an inflatable or bamboo raft, you will be driven to Lisu Lodge. (Remark: During the summer, which usually starts in April and lasts a few months, we will switch from inflatable raft to bamboo raft.)


En route at a tea plantation, we stop off to relax and enjoy a beautiful landscape at our tea plantation where you will be led by an experienced guide who will introduce you to the process of growing and harvesting tea as well as vegetation propagation to produce tea seedlings at the nursery, whilst teaching you how to pluck tea leaves and enjoy a cup of fresh-roasted tea. Enjoy a delicious picnic lunch.


Upon arrival at Lisu Lodge, a welcome drink will be served. Guided by a Lisu villager, walk from Ton Lung temple to visit the herbal garden. Then continue through the village with a stop for a cup of tea at the village shaman’s house. Chat with the Lisu shaman and learn about his life, beliefs, curing rites and Lisu traditions. After that, you will visit: Rice paddies - Walk with our guide through rice paddies where we work together with the villagers to grow rice without the use of pesticide and insecticide. Besides strolling through the green or the golden carpet of the paddy fields, depending on the season, you will learn and participate in the various stages of rice cultivation in northern Thai style. Himmapaan nursery - Learn about the flora of northern Thailand and how we restore the forest ecosystem at a tree nursery of the Himmapaan Foundation whose goal is to support and implement environmental and social projects by working with local communities in areas affected by tourism. Vegetable garden - Visit the vegetable garden where we produce organic fertilizer from leftover organic waste and grow a variety of vegetables and fruits that are used in several dishes served at Lisu Lodge. Time at leisure until Thai dinner with a traditional Lisu dance show. Overnight at Lisu Lodge


LISU LODGE – KHUM LANNAToday, after breakfast, you are free to choose an activity that suits your interest, including A guided cycling tour around the Lisu village A steam bath A traditional massage An ox-cart ride through farmlands and orchards to the Thai village of Baan Pang Mai Daeng Note: A second additional one-hour activity can be booked at a nominal charge, but you are welcome to go cycling by yourself. We will give you a road map with recommended routes.


You will be driven to Chiang Dao and the ethnic Karen village, stopping for lunch on the way. From there, we will hike through the tropical forest (two hours) to a Lahu village.


Then, you will be transferred to Khum Lanna. Enjoy a refreshing welcome drink upon your arrival at Khum Lanna. After a short rest, your host will take you to the kitchen where you will learn about Thai cooking ingredients and how to cook four authentic Thai dishes. Enjoy the fruits of your labors with a full four-course Thai dinner, with your host and friends. Stay overnight at Khum Lanna


Kum Lanna Your coffee/tea will be brought to your room as your wake-up call in the early morning. You will start the day with a sunrise cycling trip along a rural country road to visit a village market. With the help of your guide you may buy local biscuits and garlands to offer to the monks during a visit to a temple. Then you take a short walk to a local hardware shop that sells farm tools, supplies and rice seed. Chat with the owner (also a farmer) and learn more about the history of Thai rice and different species and properties of rice.


On the way back, you will pay a visit to a Buddhist temple where a respected Buddha image is enshrined under a sacred tree. Continue cycling along a scenic route of canals and rice fields. Upon your return, a Lanna-style breakfast awaits you at the riverside. Then, you will have a chance to exercise your cooking skills by making steamed sticky rice. Later, guided by your host, you will take a casual walk around Khum Lanna’s organic garden where a variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs are grown. Your lunch will include a Lanna country-style barbeque, steamed sticky rice and other delicious Thai dishes. In the afternoon, you have a variety of fun and relaxing activities to choose from, such as A guided cycling tour around the beautiful countryside of Khum Lanna A class of creative fruit (or vegetable) carving A local herbal steam bath to rejuvenate your body A therapeutic hot-pressed herbal massage Note: A second additional one-hour activity can be booked at a nominal charge but you are welcome to go cycling by yourself. We will give you a road map with recommended routes. Trekking: The level of difficulty Moderate: Accessible to all in good health, who are doing some sport regularly, and who are used to all-terrain walks. Trails can be rough or slippery depending on weather conditions. Long ascents/descents. 2-3 hours walk per day, without much carrying.
