History & Culture Local Wisdom Hands-on Workshop
With the cooperation of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), memorable trips of the King’s Wisdom for Sustainable Tourism Project were presented. Nong San is a small village in Kok Phu Sub-district, Phu Phan District surrounded by Phu Phan Mountains. Learn how Nong San people live a simple life and explore the beauty of their tradition and culture throughout the trip.

  • Fill-up your tummy with the legendary hot and spicy 'Somtum' a.k.a 'Papaya Pok-Pok', one of the Thai food treasures, originated from the Northeastern highlands
  • Visit Phu Phan Royal Development Study Centre under the Royal Initiative of HM King Rama 9, where experiments and research have been conducted to enhance conventional agricultural methods
  • Hop on 'E-Tak' or the farmer's tractor to get around the village!
  • Acquire the mastery of indigo dyeing
Day One
9.15 a.m. Meet at our meeting point: Airport / the bus station / hotels in town and get on a VIP van. 9.45 a.m. Have breakfast at Lert Rot Kai Kata, the best place for breakfast in Sakon Nakhon. Enjoy a variety of local dishes such as Vietnamese pan-fried egg and Vietnamese noodle soup. 10.30 a.m. Go to Nong San Village. 11.30 a.m. Arrive at Nong San Village. Greet the hosts and leave baggage in your room. Get on a farm tractor to explore the village. 11.45 a.m. Arrive at Sommanas Farm. Meet Auntie Aoy, the farm owner who runs the farm with the Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy.
12.30 a.m. Enjoy authentic Northern dishes. Try making a local snack using ingredients from the farm. 2.30 p.m. Leave the farm for Grandma Lorm’s place. 3.00 p.m. Learn from Granma Lorm how to make Kan Mhak Beng, a decoration of folded banana leaves. Bring Kan Mhak Beng to worship a Buddha statue at Nong San Temple. 4.30 p.m. Walk back to the homestay to take a shower. You can have a walk around the village or have small talk with the locals.
6.00 p.m. Attend Bai Sri Su Kwan, a Northeastern welcoming ceremony. Receive blessings from the elderly locals before having dinner together. 8.00 p.m. Enjoy leisure time.
Day Two
5.45 a.m. Get up early to offer sticky rice to monks, a way of making merit in Buddhism. 8.00 a.m. Have breakfast. 9.30 a.m. Walk to the house of Nong San Indigo-Dyed Fabric Group. Learn how to make indigo dye. Try dyeing fabric using indigo yourself and keep it as a souvenir.
12.00 p.m. Enjoy home-cooked Northeastern dishes such as papaya salad and fried chicken. 1.00 p.m. Leave Nong San Village for Nam Pung Dam. 1.30 p.m. Arrive at Nam Pung Dam, a royal dam built to benefit people living in Phu Phan and nearby area with various purposes such as electricity production, flood prevention and irrigation. 2.30 p.m. Visit Phu Phan Royal Development Study Centre, established for improving the livelihood of Northeastern Thai people. Follow an officer to see the 3 blacks of Phu Phan, chickens, pigs and cattle.
5.00 p.m. Visit Wat Phra Tat Cherng Chum, the main temple of Sakon Nakhon. Inside the temple are the footprints of four Buddhas. 6.00 p.m. Have dinner at Sabunnga, one of the most famous restaurants in Sakon Nakhon. Share feedback and suggestions about the trip. 7.00 p.m. Drop off at Sakon Nakhon Airport / the bus station / hotels in town.

Experience of rice planting! Although Japan is also a rice country, it was my first experience to do it myself in my life.

Once in a lifetime experience in a real indigo country. All activities are not what to be prepared for tourists, but what to be done by people everyday.
